Miss Sparta 2011- A World Without Music
June 4, 2011
Description:
This artifact contains a speech and two pictures of me giving my speech at the 2011 Miss Sparta Pageant on June 4 of 2011. As a contestant in the 2011 Miss Sparta Scholarship Pageant, I learned interview skills for the interview portion of the competition, stage performance presence for talent, public speaking skills with the speech and on stage question for quick thinking. Through this experience, I have become more confidence within myself with public speaking, being in an interview room and performing a solo performance on stage in front of hundreds of people.
Alignment:
Wisconsin Teacher Standard Alignment:
This artifact best aligns with Standard 6: Communication- teachers communicate well. The teacher uses effective verbal and nonverbal communication techniques as well as instructional media and technology to foster active inquiry, collaboration, and supportive interaction in the classroom.
This experience best aligns with Standard 6 because being a contestant in the pageant, I was able to learn and experience how it was to give a speech in front of hundreds of people, being interviewed in a professional setting, and performing in front of a large audience. All of the practices that we (contestants) had which led up to the big day were all about learning and developing our skills, or polishing the skills that we already had with public speaking. We also worked on our stage presence to help us be more comfortable in front of the public. Being committed one hundred percent of the time for each practice has helped me be more comfortable in front of an audience and more confident within myself with public speaking.
UW-Platteville Knowledge, Skill, and Disposition Alignment:
This artifact best aligns with KSD1.f: Assessing Student Learning- The candidate understands, is committed to, and can develop assessments that are clearly stated and congruent with instructional goals. The students are aware of how they are meeting the established standards and are involved in the goal setting process.
My experience of researching my platform best aligns with KSD1.f because it helped me learn how music helps students in so many different ways. Music can be one student’s “outlet” during the school day, it can be the one thing that a student excels the most in, or it can be a way of learning for the students who have a disability. Music could also be a way to help bring money into the schools and can be the “face” of the school when they are out in the public. The world as we know it would not be the same without music.
Secondary KSDs:
KSD1.b: Demonstrating Knowledge of Students
KSD1.d: Demonstrating Knowledge of Resources
KSD4.f: Showing Professionalism
Reflection
What I learned about teaching/learning from this experience:
What I learned from this experience is that music helps students in more than one way. It can help students get an A in a class, it can be an ‘outlet’ for a student, it could be the thing that a student wants to do with his/her life, or music could be a way of learning for a student. It helped me learn different ways to communicate differently, how to articulate clearly, how to use my voice in different tones when communicating, and how to figure out different ways to explain a subject.
What I learned about myself as a prospective educator as a result of this experience:
Through this experience, I have discovered as a teacher, that it is not so bad speaking in front of an audience; or in this case a classroom. I learned that I can speak in front of people about my passion and what I want to do with my life. As a result of this experience, I am comfortable and confident with speaking in front of a classroom or an audience.
