Philosophy of Education
The purpose of education is to inspire students to want to peruse and to succeed with their education. As educators, we need to set a purpose for each of our lessons so that we can ensure that our students achieve their greatest potential. Teachers need to be the heart of inspiration to students and to encourage them to want to succeed in whichever area they choose. In order to do this, we as educators need to build our content understanding of our students, use planning, instruction, and assessment with all of our lessons and students.
I believe educators need to build a content understanding of their students. This can be done in a variety of ways, like learning the background of their students for example. Also, teachers need to support the different learning needs of their students. As a future educator, one way that I will make sure to support all of my students is by having a professional relationship with all. I believe all educators need to do this, because their students would feel more comfortable in their classroom. I will help my students learn what kind of learning style they succeed with (visual, auditory, or kinesthetic), and I will make sure to plan my instructions accordingly. One way to do this is to assess the students before, during, and after the lesson. Knowing the students learning style they succeed with the most, I believe that teachers need to plan accordingly to those needs and plan before, during, and after the lessons. I believe that it is essential to allow my students to use their creativity in the classroom. This is essential for my classroom, because I am going to be a music teacher and creativity is key to making music. Using Bloom’s Taxonomy is a way that I as an educator, can use to create clear purposeful objectives. Being organized and clear with my objectives helps teachers plan and instruct the proper lesson. Also, a way to help ensure that every student is getting the most learning potential out of every lesson, is to know your students learning style as stated above in planning. According to Gardener, there are eight different intelligences that someone could have as a learning style so it can be hard to incorporate every style into each lesson, but they need to make sure that all students are learning in any type of way. No child should be left behind with their education.
I believe that the environment the student learns in needs to feel like a safe and fun classroom that he/she will feel comfortable enough to ask or answer questions, would want to engage in their learning, and would be successful. In my classroom as either a general music teacher or a band teacher, I will have a fun and safe environment for my students. I will also want to create a positive relationship with my students to help ensure full engagement from my students and to help my students feel comfortable. One way that I will ensure full engagement from my students is to create relatability, whether it is relating personally to the students content wise or creating a professional relationship with my students. Doing this allows my students the ability to connect in some way with what we are doing in class. Whether it is relating to a different class they are in, events going on at the school or community, relating to previous experiences that they might have, etc.
As an educator, assessment is one of the things that is always emphasized and talked about in conversations with fellow educators. Assessment takes part on what the students were able to understand and what the teacher feels he/she should change in their lesson or how they taught. I believe that assessment is the most important part of teaching; we as educators can use formative or summative assessments. This helps me as an educator grow to improve my teaching skills and to see what I need to change over all or in a lesson/unit. Assessment also helps to see which students are struggling or succeeding in my classroom to the objectives that were taught. Another essential thing that educators need to do with assessment is to give feedback to the students, whether it is instructive feedback for them to improve upon or good feedback. If students receive instructive feedback for something they did not understand and got wrong on their homework or exams, I, as an educator, need to reflect on what I can do differently to help them understand the topic that is being taught. Also, if needed, I can re-teach my lesson so my students can try to understand the topic I am trying to present them.
I believe that progressivism works best for students and their learning opportunities. I believe that students learn best by using hands-on experiences, being able to relate to the class, and being in while learning. Also, the students would be able to apply this knowledge to other classes they are in and for after when they graduate if they enjoy the class they are in and are able to learn at the same time.
I believe education is the core of all our knowledge. Through education, we get to develop who we are and what characteristics make us one-of-a-kind. Through planning, instruction, and assessment, teachers are able to incorporate every student in education. People need to remember that no one student learns the same as another student. As educators, we need to understand that and to allow all of our students to grow through education in their own special way. No child deserves to be left behind because they learn differently.
